08/06/2020 (Chile) - Security forces detained 28 people after protesters in the commune of Peñalolén (Santiago province; Santiago Metropolitan region) attacked the police sub-station on Wednesday night, August 5. More than 260 people reportedly took part in the protest outside the police unit on the axis of Calle Los Presidentes and Avenida Grecia. The crowd reportedly threw projectiles at the police station, and there is imagery showing security forces responding with water cannons. Two police officers were reportedly injured in the scuffles. The exact motive for the demonstration is unclear, although anti-government protests have taken place in the area in recent weeks, and the police sub-station has previously been targeted.
Further unrest and associated clashes between security forces and demonstrators are possible over the coming days.

Those in the Santiago area and throughout Chile are advised to avoid all public demonstrations, adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities, and anticipate localized disruption near any protest sites.
