6.4 magnitude earthquake strikes off Ambrym Island August 5

08/05/2020 (Vanuatu) - The United States Geological Survey(USGS) has recorded a 6.4-magnitude earthquake 71 km (44 mi) east ofLakatoro, just off Ambrym Island, on Wednesday, August 5. The quake struck at 23:05 (local time) and at a depth of 175 km (109 mi). There have been no immediate reports of casualties or infrastructural damage and no tsunami warnings have been issued.
Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks. In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from the windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
