Typhoon Hagupit causes flooding and disruptions to transport in Shanghai August 4-5

08/05/2020 (China) - Heavy rainfalls in Shanghai due to the passing to the west of the city of Typhoon Hagupit, caused flooding and disruptions to various forms of transport in the city on Tuesday, August 4, and Wednesday, August 5. The worst-hit areas in Shanghai by the rainfall were the districts of Jinshan, Fengxian, and Songjiang, which saw waterlogging of as much as 120 cm (47 in). The flooding disrupted road traffic and led to disruptions to 29 train services, five ferry services, and two bus lines. Over 600 flights across Shanghai's Pudong International Airport (PVG) and Hongqiao Airport (SHA) were affected by the storm.
The storm system made landfall on the coastal areas of Yueqing county (Zhejiang province) on Tuesday afternoon, carrying winds of 137 kph (85 mph). Hagupit was downgraded to a tropical depression on Wednesday and is forecast to pass back out to the East China Sea to the north of Shanghai late on Wednesday.
Flooding and residual disruptions to transport are expected to continue in parts of the city over the near term.
China's southern and eastern coastlines are highly vulnerable to storm systems during the rainy season from May to September. These storm systems have the potential to cause human casualties and mass displacement as well as result in travel and service delivery disruptions. Heavy downpours and strong winds, as well as associated floods and landslides, also frequently cause structural damage and lead to high economic losses.

Those in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
