09/19/2019 (Guatemala) - Local media sources report on Thursday, 19 September, that a previously announced state of emergency in multiple departments of Guatemala has been extended until at least 5 October. The directive is currently in place for the provinces of Alta Verapaz, El Progreso, Izabal, Peten and Zacapa. The state of emergency was enacted following a fatal attack against security forces by suspected drug traffickers in El Estor, Izabal province, on Tuesday, 3 September. The state of emergency allows security forces to impose curfews, detain suspects without a warrant, in addition to banning demonstrations and allowing for restrictions on freedom of movement.

Members should familiarise themselves with the circumstances of the state of emergency, including any extraordinary security measures. Travellers should exercise a heightened level of vigilance and immediately report any suspicious items or activity to security forces. Monitor local media sources for further updates on the security situation in their particular area of operations.
