09/18/2019 (Nigeria) - Local media outlets report on Wednesday, 18 September, that protests are ongoing in Port Harcourt amid an outcry over eight women killed in different hotels in recent months. The protesters are reportedly gathered in front of the Government House and have thus far been peaceful. The Rivers State Police Command said they have arrested two persons suspected to be involved in the murders. One of the suspects was arrested in Port Harcourt, while the other was tracked down in an unspecified area of Kaduna State. A task force of members from the Nigerian Police, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Rivers State Hotels and Tourism Board and the Nigerian Hoteliers Association has been set up to ensure hoteliers in the state install CCTV in their facilities. Police have linked the serial killings to cultism.

Members are advised to maintain a high level of vigilance and report any suspicious activities or items to security forces immediately. Those in Port Harcourt are advised to avoid the vicinity of the demonstrations in order to limit the chances of being affected by incidental violence, opportunistic crime, and heavy-handed police crowd dispersal tactics. Travellers should monitor local media for further information on the demonstration and heed any directives issued by the authorities.
