Shutdowns Begin as Bermuda Braces for Hurricane Humberto Effects

09/18/2019 (Bermuda) - Local media outlets report that various schools, businesses and transportation services will begin shutting down throughout the day on Wednesday, 18 September, as Hurricane Humberto nears Bermuda. The National Security Minister, Wayne Caines, has said that schools, government offices and ferries on the island would close at 1200hrs (1500 UTC) with bus services being suspended at 1600hrs (1900 UTC). As of the National Hurricane Center's 1100 UTC advisory has the hurricane's position at 240 miles (388km) west of Bermuda with maximum sustained winds at 115mph (185 km/h), moving east-northeast at 16mph (26 km/h). Rainfall is expected to be up to 5 inches (13cm) and large swells are expected along the coast.

Members should monitor local media outlets for hurricane-related updates. Heed any directives given by the authorities for the state of emergency, including evacuation orders, in order to minimise exposure to the impact and other associated risks. Plan any journey well in advance and maintain extra vigilance in the face of debris, high winds and flash floods.
