09/17/2019 (Sri Lanka) - Local media outlets report that the Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) has scheduled a nationwide strike for Wednesday, 18 September. The strike is scheduled to begin at 0800hrs (0230 UTC) and is expected to last throughout the day. An official with the association said that the government violated the National Salaries Policy by increasing the salaries only within the judicial and legal sectors.
Members within the aforementioned areas should anticipate a reduced health service capacity and should only visit hospitals if in need of emergency treatment. Travellers with pre-existing non-emergency medical appointments should call to confirm the likelihood of the appointment going ahead. Members are further advised to monitor local media in order to remain apprised of strike-related developments.
