09/16/2019 (Algeria) - According to regional media sources, an Algerian court has jailed 22 protesters who participated in anti-government demonstrations in Algiers on Friday, 13 September. Some sources have suggested that the arrests may be part of a wider clampdown on anti-government sentiment. The announcement of the arrests came just hours before Algeria's interim president Abdelkader Bensalah set Thursday, 12 December, as the date for presidential elections. Further protests should be anticipated in the coming days and weeks.

Members are advised to avoid any large crowds and protests due to the potential for violent crowd behaviour and heavy-handed police crowd dispersal measures. Travellers are further advised to review overland travel arrangements in light of potential disruptions resulting from a possible heightened security presence.
