09/15/2019 (Malawi) - According to media reports, a rally by the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is planned to take place in Lilongwe on Sunday, 15 September. Supporters of the party will gather in Mgona township for the event, which will reportedly also be attended by President Peter Mutharika. Opposition supporters have, however, vowed to block Mutharika from entering the city.
Members in Lilongwe are advised to exercise a heightened level of situational awareness and avoid all demonstrations and political gatherings due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances, incidental violence and police crowd control measures. Monitor local media for further information on the protests and associated travel disruption.
