09/15/2019 (Papua New Guinea) - Papua New Guinea will hold Independence Day celebrations nationwide over the coming days to celebrate the country's 44th anniversary of independence from Australia marked on Monday, 16 September. Celebratory events will take place across the country, with the largest celebrations expected in Port Moresby and other large urban centres. Additional police forces have been deployed to carry out additional community patrols to ensure festivities continue peacefully. Police will also reportedly be setting up roadblocks around Port Moresby during the events planned, including near the Sir John Guise Stadium where a flag ceremony has been organised for 16 September. Further events have been planned up until Tuesday, 17 September, in different locations in the city. Overland disruption is to be anticipated in the vicinity of all celebrations.

Members in Papua New Guinea, and Port Moresby in particular, should be aware of the increased numbers of people attending the celebration and maintain vigilance due to risks associated with large gatherings and celebrations such as petty crime and unruly behaviour. Monitor local media for precise locations and updates on events, as well as travel related updates on associated disruption.
