09/15/2019 (Malawi) - The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) opposition group has reportedly called for a renewed set of anti-government demonstrations in Blantyre, Lilongwe and Mzuzu from Wednesday, 18 September to Friday, 20 September. Dubbed the "2 Million March", the rallies will call for the resignation of the chairperson of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), Jane Ansah, following accusations of irregularities occurring during the May 21 general elections. Previous rallies have escalated into violence, as opposition supporters have clashed with members of the security forces. Further details regarding the exact timings and locations of the rallies are awaited.
Members in Malawi are advised to exercise a heightened level of situational awareness and avoid all demonstrations and political gatherings due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances, incidental violence and police crowd control measures. Monitor local media for further information on the protests and associated travel disruption.
