Heightened Security and Overland Disruption to be Expected amid Ongoing Demonstrations in Hong Kong

09/15/2019 (Hong Kong) - According to reports on social media outlets, several demonstrations are taking place on Sunday, 15 September, across Hong Kong. Thousands of anti-extradition protesters have reportedly taken to the streets of Hong Kong marching from Causeway Bay to Central district, despite a police ban on the proposed rally. Riot police have been deployed around transit points in central Hong Kong, along the procession route, including at the Central, Admiralty, Wanchai and Causeway Bay MTR stations. Reports indicate that the Sogo department store in Causeway Bay, as well as Hysan Place and World Trade Centre shopping malls have closed as a precaution. The Civil Human Rights Front democracy coalition reportedly tried and failed to secure police approval for the protest march. Earlier on Sunday, protesters gathered outside the British Consulate in Admiralty. Overland disruption has been reported in the vicinity of the ongoing demonstrations, and will likely continue throughout the day.
Members in Hong Kong are advised to avoid the vicinity of all political gatherings and demonstrations to minimise the risk of exposure to incidental violence, opportunistic crime and heavy-handed security response. Members with overland travel plans should review itineraries and amend them accordingly to avoid the delays associated with the protests.
