Emerging Reports of Fatalities after Tourist Boat Capsizes on Godvari River, Andhra Pradesh

09/15/2019 (India) - According to media reports, multiple fatalities are feared after a boat carrying 50 tourists on the Godvari River capsized on Sunday, 15 September. As many as 13 people are believed to have died with many others unaccounted for. The vessel was transporting the tourists to see the Papikondalu Hills when the incident occurred. Search and rescue operations are underway; further updates are awaited.
Members are advised to avoid the vicinity of the incident due to the ongoing search and rescue operations. Due to the relative frequency of vessel accidents in India, members intending to utilise ferry services or other vessels are advised to only use reputable operators with a proven safety record and with adequate contingency measures in place, such as life vests and inflatable rafts. Members should monitor local media for further updates on the incident and any associated disruptions.
