09/14/2019 (Argentina) - According to regional media sources, demonstrators gathered in Buenos Aires on Friday, 13 September, to demand that a food emergency be declared in Argentina amid economic turmoil. Protesters gathered outside the Ministry of Social Development and other on the Pueyrredon Bridge before moving towards the Ministry, where protesters have been camped for 48-hours. A session was held on Thursday, 12 September, and the Chamber of Deputies approved a food emergency bill which will be subject to debate in the Senate next week. Protest organisers, members of the Barrios de Pie movement, reportedly said on Friday that they will remove the camp, but at the same time threatened another 72-hour protest next week. Further protests should be anticipated in the short term.
Members are advised to avoid any large crowds and protests due to the potential for violent crowd behaviour and heavy-handed police crowd dispersal measures. Travellers are further advised to review overland travel arrangements in light of potential disruptions.
