09/14/2019 (Peru) - According to emerging social media sources on Friday, 13 September, protesters have gathered in Plaza de Armas in Arequipa, Arequipa Region. There is a visibly heightened security presence in the plaza; however, there have been no reports of clashes at this time. Demonstrators have gathered to further denounce the Tía María copper mining project in Islay province, Arequipa. Unrest cannot be ruled out as recent associated protests have seen clashes between security forces and demonstrators. The protest comes amid calls for a regional strike in the Arequipa Region, and other southern regions, on Monday, 16 September.

Members are advised to avoid any large crowds and protests due to the potential for violent crowd behaviour and heavy-handed police crowd dispersal measures. Travellers are further advised to review overland travel arrangements in light of potential disruptions.
