Update: Explosions at Two Oil Processing Facilities Result of Drone Attacks in Khurais and Abqaiq, Eastern Province

09/14/2019 (Saudi Arabia) - According to international media outlets, drone attacks have occurred at two oil facilities run by the state-owned Aramco company in Khurais and Abqaiq, Eastern province, on Saturday, 14 September. Video imagery on social media and international media outlets show huge fires at both oil processing plants which were a result of the drone attacks which took place at around 0400hrs (0100 UTC). According to state media, both fires are now under control. The Abqaiq oil facility is located approximately 60km (37 miles) south-west of Dhahran. The Khurais oilfield is some 200km (124 miles) further south-west. Houthi rebel fighters have been blamed for previous similar attacks, including the attack on the Shaybah natural gas liquefaction facility which took place last month and on other oil facilities in May. Authorities have not yet confirmed who is responsible. There have been no reported casualties at this time.
Members are advised to avoid the vicinity of both incidents due to the ongoing response operations. Monitor local media sources for further information regarding the attacks, and heed all directives issued by local authorities.
