Fatalities and Kidnappings Reported following Militant Attack in Djugu Territory, Ituru Province

09/14/2019 (Congo (Kinshasa)) - According to regional media outlets, at least two people were killed and 24 others were abducted following an attack by suspected militants in in Djugu Territory, Ituru province, on Thursday, 12 September. It is indicated that armed gunmen attacked Lokpa village in the Bahema North chiefdom. Additional security personnel have been deployed to track down the perpetrators and release the kidnapped villagers. The attack follows a similar incident on Wednesday, 11 September, in Loku village, where armed men attacked an IDP site, killing seven people and injuring 13 others.

Those in the eastern provinces of the DRC are advised to monitor local media sources and liaise with in-country contacts to remain apprised of security-related developments in their particular area of operations. Travellers should heed any directives issued by security forces and local authorities and abide by any extraordinary security measures which may be in place.
