09/13/2019 (Spain) - Media sources have reported that two people have died after storms brought heavy rain and flooding to many parts of southeastern Spain on Thursday, 12 September. Two people were found dead in an overturned car in Caudete in Albacete province. Three people also had to be rescued from a river by the fire department and police in Valencia, with four police officers reportedly injured in the rescue operation. The provinces of Alicante, Valencia, Murcia and Albacete have been the most heavily impacted by the rains, with reports of rivers bursting their banks and towns being flooded. The national meteorological agency, AEMET, had issued a warning ahead of the storm, with up to 180mm (7 inches) of rain forecast over 24 hours. However, some places received even greater precipitation, such as the town of Ontinyent in Valencia, which received more than 400mm (15 inches) by Thursday afternoon. Roads have been closed and train travel disrupted due to the flooding. Many schools across the region have also been closed. AEMET has issued further red 'extreme risk' level warnings for the region on Friday, 13 September.
Members in affected areas are advised to monitor local media sources for further weather and flood-related updates and heed any directives issued by local authorities. Overland travel should only be conducted if essential and drivers should exercise a heightened degree of caution in affected areas due to likely hazardous conditions caused by flooding and debris.
