09/13/2019 (Peru) - According to local media sources, students from the National University of San Marcos (UNMSM) held a protest outside their campus for a second consecutive night on Thursday, 12 September, to demonstrate against a planned bypass in Lima. The students are opposed to part of their campus being given up to allow for a new bypass. Clashes between students and police occurred on Wednesday night, 11 September, outside the university and students gathered again on Thursday on University Avenue. They reportedly started a fire on the road and police were deployed to the scene, who allegedly used tear gas and rubber pellets to disperse the students. Further unrest over the issue cannot be ruled out.
Members in Lima are advised to avoid any political gatherings or demonstrations in order to mitigate against exposure to unruly crowd behaviour, opportunistic crime and heavy-handed police responses. Monitor local media sources to for information regarding any future protests over the issue and any resultant disruption.
