09/13/2019 (Guatemala) - On Sunday, 15 September, Guatemala will commemorate its Independence Day by hosting large-scale events in Guatemala City. Reportedly, over 250 parades will take place, amid heightened security. Additional police personnel will likely be deployed around the Obelisco, Metropolitan Cathedral and Plaza de la Constitucion. Disruption is expected on several routes, including Boulevard Los Proceres, Las Americas and La Reforma avenues, and Roosevelt Road. Celebratory events should be anticipated in the days prior to Sunday, and associated delays should be expected. Guatemala gained independence from Spain in 1821.

Members in Guatemala should be aware of the increased numbers of people attending the celebration and maintain vigilance due to risks associated with large gatherings and celebrations such as petty crime and unruly behaviour. Monitor local media for precise locations and updates on events, as well as travel-related updates.
