09/13/2019 (Ethiopia) - According to international media outlets, the authorities confirmed on Wednesday, 11 September, that several individuals suspected to be members of the Islamic State (IS) militant group have been arrested in Ethiopia. Reports indicate that the alleged members were arrested in several towns close to its borders with Somalia and Kenya; arrests were made in the Somali region which borders Somalia where IS have a presence. Most of those arrested are foreign nationals from Syria and Yemen, although, a military official stated some were also Ethiopian nationals. Last month, IS reportedly announced it was producing audio and video content in Amharic, which would suggest the group had a network in the country. The discovery of IS suspects in-country highlights the latest threat of militancy generally, and the security forces' counter-terrorism capabilities as well.

Members in Ethiopia are advised to report any suspicious persons, items or activity to the authorities. Members should monitor local media sources to remain apprised of any security operations in their particular area, or other incidents which could affect personal safety, travel plans and business continuity. Furthermore, members should heed all directives issued by security forces and local authorities.
