02/18/2019 (Mali) - According to media outlets, exchanges of gunfire between German Bundeswehr troops and Armed Forces of Mali (FAMa) soldiers took place on Saturday, 16 February, in Gao. It was initially not clear who had opened fire at the German convoy, however one FAMa soldier is reportedly in critical condition following the incident. Reports indicate the German convoy, which was recovering a United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) vehicle, was shot at around 2115hrs (UTC) about 50km (32 miles) west of Camp Castor in Gao. There have been no reports of injury from the Bundeswehr troops. The incident is currently being investigated.

Members with operationally-critical travel requirements in Gao and other border regions should first conduct a thorough localised threat assessment and subject all movement to stringent security risk management procedures. Members are advised to liaise with security forces and local authorities to identify areas with ongoing security operations. Contingency measures should also be continually reviewed and updated so as to remain commensurate to the local threat environment.
