Increased Activity Reported at Mount Merapi, Central Java

02/18/2019 (Indonesia) - According to reports circulated on social media on Monday, 18 February, increased activity has been reported at Mount Merapi, Central Java. At 0605hrs (2305 UTC, 17 February) a column of ash of over 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) was released by the volcano. Imagery circulated on social media suggest that pyroclastic and lava flows are also occurring at the volcano. Despite these developments, authorities are currently advising those in the vicinity of the volcano to maintain heightened awareness. Activity at the volcano has previously seen authorities introduce a 5km (3 mile) exclusion zone remains in place around the mountain.
Members on Java Island are advised to maintain an increased level of vigilance due to further potential eruptions and should monitor local media sources in order to remain apprised of any government advisories. Any directives issued by local authorities should be adhered to, including evacuation orders.
