Foreign Nationals Arrested in Port-au-Prince for Criminal Conspiracy

02/18/2019 (Haiti) - According to regional media sources on Monday, 18 February, at least eight foreign nationals, including five US citizens, a Serbian national, a Russian and a Haitian, have been arrested in Port-au-Prince on suspicion of criminal conspiracy. The arrests come after the group were supposedly found to be in the illegal possession of automatic weapons. Some six assault rifles, six pistols, a number of cartridges, five bulletproof vests, two professional drones, telecommunications equipment and several Haitian license plates were seized during the arrest. A further two vehicles have also been taken by Haitian police. There is currently no information on if the group have been charged with their crimes.

Members are advised to avoid the vicinity of the aforementioned area while the response and investigation into the incident occurs. Members are advised to avoid all non-essential travel to Haiti due to the recent security deterioration and are advised to avoid the vicinity of protests and large-scale gatherings, as demonstrations can transform into violent episodes of unrest which can potentially prompt heavy-handed police crowd dispersal measures. Members are further advised to closely monitor local media sources for any further instructions from authorities and news regarding unrest in their area.
