Muslim Pilgrimage Extended until 19 February in Dhaka Division

02/18/2019 (Bangladesh) - According to media sources, the annual Muslim gathering, Biswa Ijtema (World Congregation), in the Dhaka division, has been extended until Tuesday, 19 February. The congregation, which was due to conclude on Monday, 18 February, is being held on the banks of the Turag river in Tongi town, Dhaka division, 14 miles (23km) north of the capital Dhaka. Biswa Ijtema is the second-largest congregation of Muslims worldwide and hundreds of thousands of people gathered at the venue this year. Members should expect considerable travel disruption and heightened security around Tongi.

Members are advised to avoid any demonstrations due to the security risk that they pose. Any large crowds should be avoided and strong situational awareness should be maintained at all times. Travellers are also encouraged to monitor local news and media for further information relating to the protests.
