02/18/2019 (South Africa) - Media sources reported on Monday, 18 February, that an armed robbery has taken place near OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) on Saturday, 16 February. The robbery was targeted at travellers who were en route from JNB in Johannesburg, Gauteng province, to their accommodation. Four criminals accosted the victims' vehicle at around 1930hrs (1730 UTC) along Smuts Avenue in the city's Waterval Estate suburb. They shot and injured the driver after the victims resisted the robbery. The incident highlights the need for members to exercise heightened vigilance and adopt enhanced precautions during road travel.
Due to the risk of exposure to violent crime, travellers in Johannesburg are advised to remain vigilant and maintain a low-profile. Members are advised against travelling via public transport or alone after dark. If targeted in a vehicle hijacking or armed robbery, remain calm and comply with demands made by the assailants. Where possible, clients should vary travel routines, including routes, timings and vehicles, to mitigate against targeted crime.
