02/18/2019 (Liberia) - According to regional media sources on Monday, 18 February, more than 60 illegal gold miners have been detained at a gold field in Nimba County, following a security operation. The arrests follow a recent mine collapse in the area, where on Sunday, 10 February, walls of a pit caved in, trapping at least 40 people. The security operation became hostile when miners, some armed, resisted arrest. A team comprising of police, army, immigration officials and drug enforcement agency staff conducted the operation.

Members are advised to avoid the vicinity of the aforementioned area while the response and investigation into the incident occurs. Members are further advised to expect potential disruption in the vicinity of the incident due to the ongoing recovery operation. Monitor local media sources for further updates on the incident. It is recommended that personnel ensure that international standard safety regulations are in place when carrying out mining or industrial operations across the country.
