02/18/2019 (Burkina Faso) - According to regional media sources on Monday, 18 February, it has been confirmed that a Spanish missionary, Antonio Fernandez, was killed by suspected militants while crossing the border from Togo to Burkina Faso. The priest, along with two others, was heading to their home city of Ouagadougou when they were attacked by armed men. It's believed some 20 men were involved in searching the vehicle, before separating Fernandez and killing him.

Due to the high threat of militancy, travel to Burkina Faso should be subject to a thorough localised threat assessment and undertaken in coordination with a trusted security provider. Members are advised to subject all travel, particularly to remote and rural areas, to strict journey management protocols. Avoid travel at night, vary routines and maintain a heightened sense of situational awareness. Monitor local media sources to remain apprised of security-related developments and adhere to any directives issued by local authorities.
