02/18/2019 (South Africa) - According to international news sources on Monday, 18 February, at least five people have been arrested following a protest action at the Mangosuthu University of Technology (DUT) in Umlazi, Durban. Around 80 students, some of whom were members of the Economic Freedom Fighters Student Command, are reported to have attended the rallies which were protesting against the recent death of a DUT student, Mlungisi Madonsela. Mlungisi was shot following an altercation with security at the campus two weeks ago. Students also used the opportunity to highlight other grievances related to safety, student funding and accommodation. According to some reports, police dispersed some students who had thrown furniture out of high-rise buildings and set it alight on Hospital Road in South Beach area. The police also used tear gas and rubber bullets at DUT to disperse unruly student protests.

Members are advised to avoid any demonstrations due to the security risk that they pose. Any large crowds should be avoided and strong situational awareness should be maintained at all times. Travellers are also encouraged to monitor local news and media for further information relating to the protests.
