Police Clash with Protesters in Barraket Essahel

02/17/2019 (Tunisia) - According to regional media reports on Saturday, 16 February, police have clashed with demonstrators in the town of Barraket Essahel located 60km (37 miles) southeast of the capital Tunis. Protesters had gathered following the death of a youth in police custody, which demonstrators blame on security forces. Police fired tear gas in order to disperse crowds, who had begun to throw stones and Molotov cocktails. At least seven people have been detained as a result of the unrest. Police reinforcements have since been deployed to the area to restore order.
Members in country are advised to avoid any large political gatherings or demonstrations in order to reduce the chances of being affected by incidental violence and consequent heavy-handed security response. Travellers should monitor local media sources for any further information and heed any directives issued by the authorities.
