Fatalities Reported following Fire in Chittagong's Chaktai Area

02/17/2019 (Bangladesh) - According to local media reports on Sunday, 17 February, at least nine people have been killed during a fire which has broken out in the area of Chaktai, Chittagong. The fire reportedly broke out in the early hours amongst slum buildings around Bhera Market. Some 200 informal structures have been destroyed by the fire which authorities have clarified is under control after five hours of emergency response operations. Investigations into the blaze are ongoing and officials currently believe that it was caused by an electrical short circuit.
Those operating in Chittagong are advised to avoid the vicinity of the incident scene as investigations continue. Members are further advised to monitor local traffic information sources for updates regarding localised disruptions.
