02/17/2019 (Bulgaria) - According to regional media sources on Sunday, 17 February, at least 2,000 far-right activists gathered on the streets of Sofia on the night of Saturday, 16 February, to honour a 'Pro-Nazi' Bulgarian general. Activists gathered, parading through the streets in dark clothing, some wearing swastikas and some performing the Nazi salute, before laying wreaths at the former head of the Union of Bulgarian National Legions, Hristo Lukov. Political parties and Jewish groups opposed the march prior to the event, but failed to get the gathering banned for a second year running. Its believed that the event brought supporters from several European countries. There were no incidents reported throughout the march, even though it was met by counter-protests.

Members are reminded that time spent in the vicinity of all political gatherings in Bulgaria should be limited due to the risk of exposure to potential incidental violence and police crowd dispersal methods. Monitor local media sources for further information.
