Disruption Expected Across the Country due to Independence Day Celebrations

02/17/2019 (Kosovo) - According to regional media sources on Sunday, 17 February, disruption should be expected across the country as Kosovo prepares to mark their day of independence. Events are planned across the country, with the most well attended expected to be the ones in Pristina. These include the Literature Awards Ceremony held by the Ministry of Culture, as well as the Job Fair at City Hall, held by Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare. Further, distinguished personalities will receive medals from the president and traditional futsal will take place throughout the country. Importantly, a military parade will be held from Zahir Pajaziti Square to Ibrahim Rugova Square from 1220hrs (1120UTC). This is expected to make these areas extremely busy, so overland disruption should be expected. Further, there are scattered recordings of Kosovan nationals firing guns into the air in celebration of independence, so if the sound of gunshots are heard, please be aware it may well be as a result of this.
Those in Kosovo are advised to avoid the vicinity of any large gatherings underway, especially in unfamiliar environments, in order to mitigate against exposure to potential collective violence and robust crowd dispersal measures by security personnel. Travellers are also advised to anticipate significant overland travel disruption and plan their journeys accordingly, factoring in extra travel time and alternative routes where possible.
