02/17/2019 (Chile) - According to regional media sources on Sunday, 17 February, firefighters in Chile are currently fighting at least 31 fires nationwide, with a further 51 fires still active, but classified as under control. The worst hit region is Araucania, with three people dead, including a firefighter, as well as at least 46 homes being lost. The most dangerous wildfires are currently in Traiguen, Biobio, near the town of Nacimiento, Cochrane and Chilean Patagonia, specifically Chile Chico. Fires are currently threatening towns and water supplies across the country. The Chilean government declared a state of catastrophe in Biobio, Araucania and Los Rios on 5 February, due to the damage of the wildfires. So far, some 4,400 wildfires have been reported since December 2018.

Members throughout Chile are advised to monitor local media outlets for the latest updates on the fire and should remain vigilant due to the propensity for forest fires to spread and change direction quickly. Any directives issued by local authorities should be strictly adhered to, including evacuation orders.
