Multiple Fatalities following Armed Attacks in Goma, North Kivu Province

02/17/2019 (Congo (Kinshasa)) - According to media reports, as many as eight people were killed following a series of overnight shootings in the areas of Goma, North Kivu Province, on Sunday, 17 February. It is reported that five people were killed and a further five were wounded in Mugunga, one person was killed in Katoy, whilst two other people were killed in Buhene. Locals have described the incidents as drive-by shootings, and were reportedly indiscriminate. The identity or affiliation of the perpetrators is not known at this time.

Due to the escalating violence within parts of North Kivu province, all non-essential travel to the region should be reconsidered. Members in the eastern provinces of the DRC are advised to monitor local media sources and liaise with in-country contacts to remain apprised of security-related developments in their particular area of operations.
