Reports of Fatalities following Al-Shabaab Mortar Attack on Baledogle Airbase, Lower Shabelle Region

02/16/2019 (Somalia) - According to local media sources, the Islamic militant group Al-Shabaab claims to have killed three US soldiers and five Somali Special Forces at the Baledogle Airbase, Lower Shabelle region, on Friday, 15 February. Reportedly the militants fired several mortar rounds at the Airbase where US soldiers are training Somali Special Forces. There has been no official statement given in regards to the attack. Further information is awaited.
Members are reminded that Somalia is considered an extreme risk environment and, as such, all travel should only be undertaken with the strictest possible risk management protocols in place. All operationally-critical movement outside of secure compounds should be conducted using a reputable security provider and in coordination with local authorities and security forces.
