02/16/2019 (Nigeria) - International and national news outlets are reporting that the Nigerian general elections, which were due to begin on Saturday, 16 February, have been postponed until Saturday, 23 February, despite no justification having been provided. Reports suggest that the announcement, which came from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), is due to events over the past week whereby their offices were set ablaze, causing the destruction of thousands of electronic smart card readers and voting cards. However, this is mere speculation. The only statement given by the INEC was that proceeding with the election was no longer feasible and that the delay would give the commission time to address vital issues.

Members in Nigeria should avoid the vicinity of any political gatherings as well as any polling stations as they could become sites of violence and opportunistic crime. Members should comply with any restrictions or directives issued by the authorities and monitor local media sources for further information.
