02/16/2019 (Zimbabwe) - According to regional media sources on Saturday, 16 February, rescue operations have begun at the illegal mines of Silver Moon mine and Cricket Mine, both near Battlefields, some 175km (108miles) from Harare, following the flooding of several mine shafts. While the original estimated figure of fatalities was at least 38 people, it is now believed this could rise to at least 50 people. Miners have been trapped in the illegal gold mine since Tuesday, 12 February, after a nearby dam burst caused the shafts they were working in to flood.

It is recommended that personnel ensure that international standard safety regulations are in place when carrying out mining or industrial operations across the country. Members are advised to expect potential travel disruption in the vicinity of the mine as emergency teams continue operating at the site. Travellers should monitor local media sources for further updates on the incident.
