02/15/2019 (Haiti) - The US State Department issued, on Friday, 15 February, a 'Level 4: Do Not Travel' advisory, the highest travel advisory level, due to the ongoing widespread, violent and unpredictable demonstrations in Port au Prince and elsewhere in the country. Crime and civil unrest have been ongoing for over a week with the president, Jovenel Moise, refusing to step down following accusations of corruption. The US embassy has ordered the departure of all non-emergency personnel and their family members from the country. Canada has also closed its embassy due to the deteriorating security situation, which is expected to worsen.

Members are advised to avoid all non-essential travel to Haiti due to the recent security deterioration and are advised to avoid the vicinity of protests and large-scale gatherings, as demonstrations can transform into violent episodes of unrest which can potentially prompt heavy-handed police crowd dispersal measures. Members are further advised to closely monitor local media sources for any further instructions from authorities and news regarding unrest in their area.
