02/14/2019 (Guinea-Bissau) - National and local news outlets are reporting that teachers are set to strike nationwide from Thursday, 14 February, until Thursday, 7 March, due to unsettled disputes over pay and allowance arrears. This follows the student protest that occurred on Friday, 8 February, during which students blocked roads and set alight vehicles in Bissau. During these demonstrations, police dispersed the protestors by deploying tear gas, with reports stating that 19 people were injured as a result. The teachers suspended a similar protest in early January following what they thought to be successful negotiations. However, the teachers have accused the authorities of not adhering to the agreed terms set out during these talks.

Members are advised to avoid all demonstrations and political gatherings in Guinea-Bissau due to the risk of exposure to incidental violence, opportunistic crime and police crowd dispersal operations. Anticipate an increased security presence in urban centres throughout the country, particularly in Bissau, and heed any directives issued by authorities. Monitor local media sources for protest-related updates and information regarding resultant travel disruption.
