02/14/2019 (Bulgaria) - According to local media reports, far-right nationalist and neo-Nazi groups are expected to hold a large rally in Sofia on Saturday, 16 February. The event, held annually in Sofia since 2003, reportedly commemorates the death of Hristo Lukov, a prominent pro-Nazi Second World War General. The rally is scheduled to begin at 1730hrs (1530 UTC) outside the National Palace of Culture (NDK) in Sofia. Simultaneous counter-protests held by anti-fascist groups are also anticipated in the vicinity of the rally.
Travellers are advised to anticipate localised overland travel disruptions in the vicinity of the rally due to road closures and heightened security measures. Members are reminded that time spent in the vicinity of all political gatherings in Bulgaria should be limited due to the risk of exposure to potential incidental violence and police crowd dispersal methods. Monitor local media sources for further information.
