02/14/2019 (Australia) - According to international media sources on Thursday, 14 February, a large wildfire is currently out of control in the district of Tabulam, New South Wales. Firefighting operations are underway; however, due to the frequent and sudden changes of wind direction and the recent hot and dry weather in the area, emergency responders are struggling in containing and control the fire. At least ten houses and 23 outbuildings had been destroyed, and six further homes damaged, in the city of Tingha, which is now surrounded by the flames. The Bruxner Highway at the village had been closed in both directions between Tabulam Road and Bellevue Road and has now been reopened with traffic restrictions. Several areas had to be evacuated and, thus far, no casualties have officially been reported. A resident has been arrested as suspect of inadvertently starting the fire while burning rubbish in her backyard. Local authorities fear the situation may worsen in the upcoming days, as the blaze approaches the Inverell Airport (IVR) and the Old Mill municipality.

Members are advised to monitor local media outlets for the latest information on the wildfire and any related public safety messages. Due to the unpredictable nature of the fires and their ability to rapidly spread and change direction, members in the area should review contingency plans and be prepared to leave at short notice. All directives issued by local authorities should be strictly adhered to, including evacuation orders. All overland and air travel in the region should be reviewed prior to travel to assess whether it will be affected by the fires and that members are not putting themselves in harm's way by conducting their travel.
