Large Emergency Operation Following Explosion at Plant in Alsdorf, North Rhine-Westphalia

02/14/2019 (Germany) - According to local media sources, emergency operations are underway in Alsdorf, district of Aachen, in North Rhine-Westphalia, following an explosion occurred at around 0400hrs (0300 UTC) in a plant located on Carl-Zeiss-Strasse. First emergency responders reported an unusual smell usually associated with gas explosions, and therefore requested the intervention of a CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear) squad which is currently investigating into the cause of the explosion and eventual health hazards resulting from the incident. Preliminary reports suggest the plant stored a wide variety of chemicals in its premises. Thus far, no casualties have been reported amid the workers of the plant or the residents. The area has been cordoned off and localised disruption is to be accounted for. Further details are awaited.
