02/14/2019 (Zimbabwe) - Local media sources report that on Tuesday, 13 February, at least 38 miners are feared to have been killed after the flooding of two underground mines near Battlefields, Mashonaland West Province. The flooding which was caused by recent heavy rains, led to the collapse of a dam wall, leaving 34 miners trapped underground at Silver Moon Mine and another four at the Cricket Mine. According to a police spokesperson, civil protection teams have been tasked with draining water from the mines with heavy duty pumps, adding that the water levels are still on the rise, further perpetuating fears of more drownings.

It is recommended that personnel ensure that international standard safety regulations are in place when carrying out mining or industrial operations across the country. Members are advised to expect potential travel disruption in the vicinity of the mine as emergency teams continue operating at the site. Travellers should monitor local media sources for further updates on the incident.
