Security Operations Launched in Rio de Janeiro and Baixada Fluminense Region, Rio de Janeiro State

02/14/2019 (Brazil) - According to local media sources on Thursday, 14 February, a security operation is underway in Rio de Janeiro and in several locations of the Baixada Fluminense region, Rio de Janeiro state. The operation targets the alleged leaders of a criminal group and militia active in the area. It is part of a wider operation, ariming at the crackdown and dismantling of several criminal groups . As many as 20 arrest warrants are being issued by local security forces, along with more than 18 searches. Thus far, no clashes have been reported. Operations may cause localised disruption. Further security operations may occur in the short term across the city and surrounding areas.

Members are advised to exercise a heightened level of situational awareness, especially in higher crime areas such as transport hubs, public squares and parks, tourist sites, and nightlife areas. Any crimes or suspicious activity should be immediately reported to the police.
