02/14/2019 (Italy) - Local media sources report on Thursday, 14 February, that numerous people have been hospitalised or requested medical assistance following the inhalation of smoke and fumes from the large fire started earlier today in an alluminium production plant, located on Via Indipendenza in Casoria municipality, Campania region. Multiple residents have been evacuated from the area. Reportedly, columns of smoke are now rising above the centre of Naples and the area and respiratory problems may increase in the short term. Firefighters are taking the fire under control. Investigations into the cause of the blaze have been launched, however, unconfirmed reports suggest it is arson, as several other commercial activities and small factories have recently been torched or damaged. The involvement of criminal groups attempting to establish racket schemes in the area has not been ruled out. Further information is awaited.
Members are advised to avoid the vicinity of the fire due to the ongoing response. Monitor local media for the latest updates on the fire and any associated travel disruption. Those operating in close vicinity to the fire are advised to keep all windows and doors shut in order to reduce the risk of harmful smoke inhalation and should strictly adhere to any directives issued by local authorities, including evacuation.
