Travel Disruptions Reported following Train Derailment between Knjazevac and Podvis, Zajecar District

02/14/2019 (Serbia) - According to local authorities and media sources, a freight train travelling on the Nis-Zajecar line derailed at around 0145hrs (0045 UTC) between the stations of Knjazevac and Podvis, Zajecar District. at least five of the train's cars were carrying ammonia. The railway company statement indicates that the tanks did not overturn, they are not damaged and there are no leaks, as well as no dangers for people and the environment. No casualties resulted from the incident and recovery operations are underway. Heavy disruption is to be expected due to the mandatory temporary suspension of operations on lines where trains delivering potentially hazardous freight experience incidents.
Members planned to travel via rail in the area are advised to anticipate travel disruption to rail services, and a surge in demand for alternative means of travel until operations return to normal. Monitor local media reports for further updates.
