Fire at Election Office in Anambra State

02/13/2019 (Nigeria) - According to local and international media, a fire broke out at an office of Nigeria's electoral commission (Inec) in Anambra state on Tuesday, 12 February, The fire in the Inec compound in the state capital Akwa was reportedly started inside a shipping container, which it is believed contained election-related materials. Although the cause of the fire has not been confirmed, it is the third fire to have hit an Inec office this month as the country builds up to the presidential election in four days time, and as with the other fires, arson is suspected. Inec has called on police to provide extra security for its offices.

Members in Nigeria are advised to avoid the vicinity of election offices, polling stations and political rallies in the coming days as these are often the focus for electoral-related violence. Travellers are also encouraged to monitor local media for further information relating to the elections and any associated disruptions in their particular area of operations.
