02/13/2019 (South Sudan) - According to local media sources, a spokesperson for the rebel group the National Salvation Front (NAS) released a statement on Tuesday, 12 February reporting that 13 civilians and 7 South Sudanese army soldiers had been killed during clashes between the rebels and the army in Equatoria region over the previous five days. The spokesperson stated that South Sudan People's Defence Forces (SSPDF) were responsible for the deaths of the civilians during their attacks on NAS positions around Wudabi and Lujulo in the Morobo area of Yei River State. NAS fighters were also reportedly ambushed by an SSPDF reconnaissance unit in Mundari, but the ambush was repelled and seven SSPDF soldiers were killed in the fighting. The region has now reportedly returned to a similar war-like state as it was in before the peace agreement was signed by many of the country's warring parties in September 2018.
Members are advised that due to the risk posed by communal violence, rebel-government clashes and violent crime, South Sudan remains an extremely high-risk operational environment and all but essential travel to the country should be avoided. Members conducting operationally-critical deployments are advised to operate under strict security and journey management procedures and should coordinate their operations with local security forces in order to avoid areas of current instability.
