02/13/2019 (Afghanistan) - According to aviation news sources on Wednesday, 13 February, heavy rain and snowfall has forced the closure of flights in and out of Herat International Airport (HEA) and has closed highways on the Herat-Islam Qala, Herat-Torghondi and Herat-Kandahar routes. There are reports that motorists and their passengers are currently stranded on the highways. Authorities are doing all they can to reopen the roads, but it is not clear how long the closures are expected to last. Three people have been killed on the highways in the floods and a further two killed in a house collapse. The rain is reportedly the heaviest experienced in a decade.

Travellers wishing to fly via HEA should contact their flight provider ahead of departure in order to clarify the status of their journeys. Members are advised to monitor local media services for any further information and heed any directives issued by the authorities.Members should expect overland travel delays and avoid the area, if possible. If travel is necessary, identify flood-hit areas prior to travel and plan accordingly.
